We manufacture our watches with proper respect for the planet.
Here we disclose detailed information about our products
and the ethical commitment behind them.
- Disclosure of materials
To make sure that our customers feel completely secure when using our products, we at CITIZEN are extremely careful about all the materials and chemicals that go into the components of our watches. We are in compliance with relevant global regulations on the management of chemicals, including the European Union’s RoHS Directive and also REACH Regulation, which is regarded as the strictest and most wide-ranging regulation for chemicals in the world. To achieve compliance, we use a cutting-edge system devised by JAMP* that transmits information on chemicals through the supply chain. The composition data from this system is also used in the management of DRC conflict minerals.
*JAMP (Joint Article Management Promotion-consortium) was established in 2006 in Japan to disclose and transmit information on chemicals contained in products across the supply chain.
Stainless steel and copper alloys used for watch parts are both materials with a high level of recyclability.- Chemical information complying with EU REACH Regulation
The watch and/or its components may contain the substances below at a level above the threshold of 0.1% by weight. These substances are listed as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) as mandated by REACH regulation. Customers, however, can use the watch quite safely even though these substances are used in the battery.

We do not use any minerals sourced from smelters linked to illegal mining operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo whose profits go towards financing armed groups. Tantalum, tungsten and tin are all examples of conflict minerals.

SUPPORT- Using FSC-certified paper
FSC-certified paper is used for the manual and the box of CITIZEN L. The paper all comes from wood from sustainably and responsibly managed forests.
- What is the FSC?
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council®. The FSC is an international organisation headquartered in Germany. In the context of green consumerism and problems with deforestation and environmental degradation, the FSC sets the criteria for the certification of well-managed forests. The FSC has drawn up 10 principles and criteria for responsible forest management which forest owners/managers must follow to secure certification. In the FSC certification system, the FSC logo is appended to wood-based products (furniture, paper etc.) made with wood from certified forests. The logo enables consumers to recognize certified products. These certified products enjoy elevated levels of recognition in the marketplace and are actively sought by consumers on environmental grounds. The more certified products that are sold, the greater the number of responsibly managed forests and the more wood that is used without any accompanying deforestation or environmental deterioration.
Your watch comes in packaging that can be reused for other purposes, whether carrying your passport, make-up or pens and pencils.
